How to Guide - Connecting Your Laptop to HDTV Or TV

'm writing this guide after being asked a few times on ways to connect a laptop to a TV. People want to achieve this for several reasons. First, it's great for presentations at work, school, or home. It's also convenient for viewing pictures and videos to friends, watching DVDs, and it is now even being used for viewing Blu-ray and other high definition content on the HDTV.

First, we want to make sure you're getting the most out of your laptop when it comes to displaying it on the TV.

* If you have an HDTV with HDMI inputs, check if your laptop has an HDMI output. If it does, you're in luck! Your HDTV can display from your laptop in HD resolutions. All you need is an HDMI cable to connect them. If your HDTVs HDMI inputs are used up already. An HDMI switch would be the best solution for you. We supply switches that can connect up to 5 different HDMI sources to 1 HDMI input.
* If you don't have an HDMI output on the laptop, check if it has a DVI output. Some ASUS, and Dell laptops have them. If you do, you can connect your laptop to an HDTV with an HDMI to DVI cable. They are both digital cables so this will produce the same HD resolutions as a standard HDMI cable.
* If your laptop doesn't have HDMI or DVI out, it should have a VGA output. Connecting with VGA is capable of high resolutions. However, different TVs support different resolutions with VGA. You must check the maximum resolution your TV model supports with VGA.
* Pretty much all laptops come with an S-Video output. It's not going to be as great of a picture, but it will certainly do the job with an S-Video cable.

After you have connected your chosen cable, boot up your laptop and see if it has detected your TV. If not, you have to go into your display properties and look for the settings that will enable your TV to display from your laptop. Where to find the setting will vary depending on your graphics card (just look around). If you are having trouble getting your TV to show a picture, make sure you have updated the display drivers on your laptop. Now you're probably going to want sound from something other than your laptop speakers. So you can choose to output it to your TV, or blast it from your home theater audio receiver.

* The best way to connect audio to your TV or receiver is through a digital audio cable. Both a digital coaxial cable or Toslink optical audio cable will work great for crisp high quality audio. Just make sure your laptop has either a digital coaxial or an optical audio output. Some laptops use the headphone jack to double as a digital coaxial (S/PDIF) output. If you use this method, your going to need a 3.5mm to RCA adapter with a digital coaxial cable. If your laptop has none of these outputs and you still really want that high quality sound. Don't worry! You can still get an external (USB) sound card that has digital coaxial out or optical out. I recommend the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 SB1090 with Toslink Optical audio out.
* Another way, which won't require any add-ons, is to use the headphone (3.5mm) jack on your laptop to the RCA (red and white) inputs on your TV or receiver. To do this, all you need is a 3.5mm to 2 RCA adapter with a 2 RCA audio cable.

I know all of these cables can seem confusing to you. If you're having trouble finding out what each cable looks like or find out more about a cable, check out the Cable Guide at CableTrain.com. All of these cables are available for you on our website as well. I hope you can now successfully connect your laptop to the TV in the best way possible!

Very good HD & SD & USB video player5
After some fiddling with outputs from freesat HD box and Panasonic HD recorder we've got some stunning picture quality through HDMI. MP4s upscaled to twice the native resolution still look good with the media player. Everything about this box says quality apart from the price. Wii picture looks cleaner despite only coming in through the scart socket. SD can look a tiny bit fuzzy if you're too close, however sit at the right distance and the picture is better than I could have imagined. Worth finding a retailer that can sell you a 5 year guarantee for 10% of the purchase price - especially if you're not Richer (hint)

Manufacturer's Description

Full HD 1080P

Anyone can say they have the clearest picture, but only Full HD 1080p has twice the detail and twice the resolution of regular HDTV. It delivers dazzlingly, rich colour and vivid details, and even corrects the errors from standard definition content. It's definitely not your father's HD.

Great Value!5
I was looking for a cheap full HD TV and saw this, after reading the other reviews I decided to go ahead with the TV and wasn't disappointed. Set up was extremely easy, the picture is fantastic, it looks nice, and the price can't be beaten.

The best feature for me on this TV was the USB input, I already have the WDTV device and has served me well but when I plugged my external hard rive into the USB it immediately recognised the device - the menus are in a nice easy format and it played every video I have , from mp4 & AVI to .MKV files (this was the biggest surprise to me that it could play the High Def file type, I have HD files and the video quality is astounding),

You can resize the videos to fit the screen using the tools button and skip quickly through the file using the cursors on the remote (instead of using the fast forward and rewind, people who watch AVI's know the frustration of losing your video postion and having to fast forward at a maximum of 16x to the correct place!).

All in all, if you want a full HD TV at a low price then look no further, the only downside for me was that you can't record via USB but apart from that I can't fault it.

Samsung LE32B350 32 Inch LCD TV Review

Samsung's offering for 2009, the LE32B350 32 Inch LCD TV, came, saw, and impressed. The driving force of this HD ready TV lies inside its piano black casing, the Wide Colour Enhancer 2 engine. This Samsung innovation boosts the viewing quality by enhancing and strengthening the red, green, and blue colours of the screen making the images look extremely natural. And because it has been engineered to have a high contrast ratio, you can easily notice and appreciate the depth. And shadings of what are shown by this LCD TV. This makes it easy to understand why Samsung LCD's have been gaining popularity in many homes and living rooms today.

The design itself may not be standing out from the rest; it looks mainly like all other Samsung TV's, which, in the opinion of many, lies one of its strengths. Its simplicity and solid finish gives it a look and feel that it would last forever. The screen itself is where many of its strength lie. First, its ability to bounce sunlight or any other source of light allows it to provide a top quality image. It also is highly resistant to smudges and fingerprints and can easily be wiped off. Plus, a swivelling stand allows for better viewing at an angle of your choice. A home theatre system will always work wonders for watching any movie or show, but, if you're not in the market for a home theatre system yet, you won't be disappointed. Despite being sold as an entry level, the Samsung LE32B350 32 Inch LCD TV comes with a built-in SRS Tru-Surround HD system that provides this unit with an enhanced audio performance. The Tru-Surround System also works well with the two speakers, each with 5 watts of power, with indirect firing technology built into the LCD TV.

With the Samsung LE32B350 32 Inch LCD TV, you get two HDMI sockets that are rear mounted for any of your high definition sources, like a Blu-Ray player, HDTV box and whatever else. LED TV Review of a Samsung HDTV

Okay first the bad news. The new LED HDTV sets are great and you are going to want to get one if you take a good look at the picture. So if you are considering looking at LED technology I suggest you stay away from the big box store if you intend to exercise some restraint. They look that good!

But there are also a few warnings about the most recent technology out on the market which of course is 3D HDTV. Now, I'm not going to lie to you here. 3D is a really cool technology and it looks incredible but after hearing a few of my colleagues complain about headaches and dizziness I started to look a bit deeper. Turns out there are some warnings you may want to know about.

I'm not overly hung up over this because I plan to get a 3D TV and use it for regular Blu Ray Discs - not 3D Blu Ray. I plan to see how many reports of weakened vision and accidents from watching 3D TV first - just to be safe. Read on...

These warnings are published on Samsung literature and accompany your 3D HDTV set when unpacking your unit.

3D LED HD TV Warnings - LED TV review report from Samsung Warning Labels:

• "Children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues associated with viewing in 3D and should be closely supervised when viewing these images" Samsung said on its website.

• "Some viewers may experience an epileptic seizure or stroke when exposed to certain flashing images or lights contained in certain television pictures or video games.

• "If you suffer from, or have a family history of epilepsy or strokes, please consult with a medical specialist before using the 3D function" Samsung says.

• It's not just those who are already aware they might have problems that are at risk though.

• "Even those without a personal or family history of epilepsy or stroke may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause photosensitive epileptic seizures" said Samsung.

• "Pregnant women, the elderly, sufferers of serious medical conditions, those who are sleep deprived or under the influence of alcohol should avoid utilizing the unit's 3D functionality.

• "Viewing 3D television may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain and decreased postural stability"

• Samsung are recommending that viewers take frequent breaks from watching 3D TV in order to lessen the potential effects.

• "If your eyes show signs of fatigue or dryness or if you have any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use of this device and do not resume using it for at least thirty minutes after the symptoms have subsided"

Maybe I'm just psychotic but frankly I'm not real concerned about these warnings. I don't plan to watch 3D TV all day, every day. I just want to use it when watching a movie once or twice a week at the max. My total exposure to TV is maybe 2 hours every 2 weeks. I suppose if you planned to watch the news in 3D you may (or could) experience more severe problems.

Like everything else including watching television... ALL things in moderation folks! You should not drink gallons of alcohol in one sitting and you probably should not watch 6 hours of TV everyday either.

As Americans we usually don't know when to quit. It is estimated that the average teenager watches 4 hours of TV everyday. What a total waste of time... You can raise your kids however you like, but you are personally responsible for their ability to contribute anything useful to society. Sitting in front of the TV 4 hours a day or even 1 hour in my view is ridiculous. We need to find something useful to occupy our minds and entertain our children.

I think the above warnings are probably issued for Americans. (yes, I am an American) Now, I love American, I love this country, and I love what it was founded on. So when Samsung puts a warning in their HDTV boxes about excessive use of 3D HDTV it makes me wonder who the warning was intended for. And I think the finger is pointing at US.

Why should You get a 3D HDTV anyway?

or visit site amazon ukEmerging technology indicates that the tech field is going to keep moving at a very fast clip. Even if you never used the 3D technology available on the set you purchased if you buy a 3D TV you have the capability. The prices are a bit more -but if you plan to spend a couple grand on a set whats a few hundred dollars more?

And, when you are ready to upgrade to a 3D blu Ray Player you won't have to buy a brand new TV set. So, to me it just makes sense to plan ahead.

My LED HDTV picks - Highest Quality sets at Top, Moving Down to Budget sets at the Bottom; These are non 3D HDTV set picks:

Samsung UN55B8500 $4000: - sets the bar high for all HDTV sets to beat. The buck stops here. Awesome everything! The big Samsung has local dimming on the LED's and incredible color. Phenomenal HDTV set! (Not cheap!)

LG 55LH90 around $1800 online: This set is much less expensive than the Samsung UN55B8500 model and it is nearly as good. This is my favorite HDTV out of this group and for the money - you can't go wrong here! But if you have the big bucks go for the Samsung above. The big LG is very tough to beat at this price point.

Samsung UN46B8000 $2000 online: (Amazon) offer incredible black levels and performance. A good price for this unit.

Samsung LN46B750 $1350 online: (Amazon) This set is not an LED but a typical LCD. However, you may be hard pressed to notice. This is a great conventional back-lit model and worth every penny.

Samsung LN40B650 $1000 online and is a good value set that outperforms most sets in this price range. This little Samsung is very hard to beat at this price.

LG 37LH30 $700-$750 online: This budget 37 inch HDTV does not have a perfect picture due to uneven screen brightness and black levels but performs very well within its price constraints.

Vizio VO320E $500 online: 32 inch budget display is a great Vizio LCD TV with good overall picture quality. If used with a decent blu ray player provides a convincing HD picture on a budget.

Vizio VA19L around $200: 19 inch budget display has a great image and would work well for a kitchen, bedroom, or patio set.

These are all regualar 2D HDTV sets. The 3D sets are being tested now and we will have our results out soon. If you are in the market for a 2D set one of the above HDTVs should work great for you.

The HDTV scene is changing so fast it is difficult to keep up with all the advancements. I have always felt that a purchase should be made when the technology matures a bit. I do plan to get a 3D HDTV but I will probably wait a little while. If you must get a set and are not concerned with 3D the sets listed above are highly recommended not just by myself but all over the web.

As always enjoy your Entertainment!

The LCD HDTV Buyers Guide - How to Choose the Right HDTVThe LCD HDTV Buyers Guide - How to Choose the Right HDTV

Although 3D TV is all the rage in the news, most are too expensive for us working stiffs. Thus, LCD HDTV systems are still the main choice in Television sets-and will be the subject of this guide.

A few things to remember to start
1) An HDTV will look bigger in your living room than it will in the store

2) Be sure that you measure the space that you have for your TV (as well as other peripherals that you may add to your entertainment center.

3) 1080p definition is not automatically a huge upgrade from 720p. Yes, 1080p HDTV sets are higher definition. However, there are many comparable 720p HDTVs.

4) The further you are when viewing HDTVs, the less important definition standard becomes. Generally speaking, if you are 8ft away from a 37 inch set, you won't notice the difference between 1080p and 720p.

Display Technology-Some basics

LCD-Better models will have higher refresh rates. You can get this by the above experiment, but also looking at the specs of the TV. The most popular amongst flat screen HDTV sets

LED-Use less electricity than LCD HDTV systems, have improved color brightness and motion smoothness. However, they are also more expensive-usually significantly so.

Plasma- These sets are better than LCD HDTV at handling movement, and have a comparable price tag. However, they are bulkier, heavier, and less efficient. Many plasma HDTV sets run hot, and generally do not last as long as LCD or LED HDTV sets.

The best way is to look at the set hands on. For more reading on this subject, read a similar article on how to select your LCD HDTV set
